Alta Badia
Arriving in Alta Badia means arriving in a valley where nature is still intact, also thanks to the Ladin population living there. The Ladin people has never ceased to respect nature. Some examples are: men never cut trees, if they knew that the risk of mountain slides was present; buildings were built on perfectly stable soils. Buildings were far from creeks and protected from the strong winds. This close relationship between man and nature in Alta Badia is still evident in handcraft, especially in the wooden statues field. Here wood carving has a long tradition and a very good and deserved reputation.
Alta Badia can be very interesting for children as well. In San Vigilio di Marebbe (German: Sankt Vigil in Enneberg, Ladin Mareo) a family hotel staff organizes many kinds of hiking trips in the Dolomites “tailored” on the children needs. Thanks to these hiking trips it’s possible to discover the Fanes- Sennes Braies natural park (Italian: Parco Naturale Fanes-Sennes-Braies, German: Naturpark Fanes-Sennes-Prags) or old mills where it’s possible to see how flour was produced in the ancient times. Children from 4 till 7 years old can hear the Ladin fairy-tales and legends every afternoon, to be transported in the magic kingdom of Fanes ruled by princess Dolasilla and populated by dwarfs and kings. During their holidays Alta Badia children can enjoy an entertainment program every evening; the family hotels in the Dolomites organize grill parties in the garden where children…can imitate the hotel chefs!
Alta Badia wooden sculptures
The art of wooden sculptures in Val Badia (German: Gadertal) and Val Gardena (German: Grödental, Ladin Gherdëina) has very old roots and the high competence level of carvers is witnessed by the following objects: wooden altars, doors, tables, religious statues, rose windows, toys and so on. You can count on painting and carving demonstrations. During the Advent period, every Val Badia and Val Gardena sculptor carve his/her own crib and they are exposed in your mountain resort central street.
